Retake and reapply guidelines
If you do not pass an exam, you must wait 60 days before you can retake the same exam. The 60-day waiting period cannot be waived.
However, you are welcome to reapply after three days.
Who is considered a re-applicant?
Re-applicants are candidates who have previously qualified for an exam but then did not take or pass it.
- Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) — excludes approval of the SPI exam under the SPI Examination Requirement
- Abdomen (AB)
- Adult Echocardiography (AE)
- Breast (BR)
- Fetal Echocardiography (FE)
- Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN)
- Pediatric Echocardiography (PE)
- Pediatric Sonography (PS)
- Vascular Technology (VT)
Why is there a waiting period for exam retakes?
Imposing a waiting period between examination retakes allows you time to seek remedial preparation regarding the applied for examination area. It also limits your exposure to examination items and discourages memorization.
How do I apply for an exam retake?
After 72 hours of taking and not passing the exam, submit another online application and payment.
Your eligibility period will begin 60 days from the last date you took the examination.
Applying as a Re-applicant
Applying for an exam as a re-applicant is different depending on whether you have a current Clinical Verification (CV) form on file.
If yes, simply submit a new application and exam fee. The application will be approved automatically and you will be able to schedule within a day — or immediately when the window opens for windowed exams.
If no, you must submit a new application, the exam fee, and a current CV form. To access your CV forms:

- Select “Application Center”
- Select “Clinical Verification Form”
