The Certification Board of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CBCMR) certification program validates your expertise in cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (MR).

The exam assesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities that leaders in the field need. It signals expertise in CMR protocols, image interpretation, and clinical applications across ischemic heart disease, cardiomyopathies, valvular disease, and congenital cardiac conditions—beyond what is required for medical licensure.

Job Task Analysis
Quality exams start with a single purpose: reflect real-world care. We routinely evaluate and update the CBCMR exam to ensure that it captures the requirements of today’s practice.
Question format & scoring
The CBCMR exam covers 160 questions over 4 hours.

Scoring
After the exam window closes, we observe 60 days before releasing scores. Results are published on the following Monday or next business day.
- Pass/fail score
- Point scale 300 to 700 (555 or better passes; not percentage or curve-based)
If you do not pass, you must wait until the next administration to retake the CBCMR exam. Those who have failed three times must wait an additional year before their next attempt.
