Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy: Practical Echo Recognition, Scanning Strategy, and Sonographer Workflow

Melissa Gienger, RDCS, BA Kinesiology, BA Psychology  |  September 11, 2026

title card: Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy: Practical Echo Recognition, Scanning Strategy, and Sonographer Workflow

Join us for an educational webinar on Scanning Strategy & Sonographer Workflow for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is one of the most challenging conditions a sonographer can encounter at the machine — subtle obstructive gradients can be missed, septal measurements are easy to get wrong, and the right provocation technique can make all the difference in an accurate study. This practical, case-based session for registered sonographers, facilitated by Melissa Gienger, RDCS, sharpens scanning strategy and workflow for HCM patients, covering how to distinguish obstructive from non-obstructive HCM, apply correct measurement protocols, interpret key Doppler waveforms and strain patterns, and select the right provocation method for each patient.

Learners will:

  • Distinguish obstructive vs. non-obstructive HCM subtypes.
  • Apply correct measurement protocols, including proper septal wall technique.
  • Interpret Doppler waveforms, mitral regurgitant velocity, and strain patterns.
  • Select the right provocation method — Valsalva, goal-directed Valsalva, exercise stress echo, or squat-to-stand.
  • Follow an imaging protocol that ensures obstructive gradients are never missed.

On Demand Viewing

CME Waiver Eligibility

This event is eligible for one (1) free waived CME toward ARDMS/APCA CME requirements for qualified participants.

To qualify, participants must:

  • Watch on-demand webinar.
  • Complete the webinar survey by December 31, 2026, including:
    • Providing an accurate ARDMS/APCA ID number.
    • Answering all required questions in the survey (including knowledge/checkpoint items, if present).

Webinar surveys submitted after December 31, 2026, will not be accepted toward a waived CME. For active ARDMS/APCA registrants, the CME will automatically be uploaded to the participant’s account within three (3) weeks, provided a valid ID number is submitted on the survey.

Please note: Attending the live event and watching the recording will not allow you to claim two (2) CME waivers; this activity is only eligible for one (1) CME waiver per participant.
