Midwife Sonography Certification (Midwife)

General Sonography and Maternal Fetal Health

Administered by ARDMS

2026 applications are currently under review. Check back in September 2026 for an update.

Overview

We are currently reviewing the Midwife Sonography Certificate program to make sure it continues to meet the evolving needs of midwifery practice and the communities midwives serve. As part of this review, the 2026 application cycle will not proceed as previously scheduled.

We know this may affect your certification planning, and we appreciate your patience while we work through this process thoughtfully. We’ll post updates here as they become available — please check back in September 2026.

In the meantime, if you’re looking for expanded maternal-fetal ultrasound and monitoring options, explore the Inteleos family’s POCUS Maternal Fetal Health Certification and related offerings (OB Essentials, OB First Trimester, OB Second/Third Trimester, and the Fetal Monitoring Credential), designed for clinicians who care for pregnant patients.

It has two parts.

  • A five-year maintenance activity

  • Are compliant with all ARDMS policies, and
  • Hold an active Certified Midwife (CM) or Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) credential from the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB)

Renewal fee

Five-Year Maintenance Activity

Timeline

Your maintenance cycle begins the day you earn your certification, and runs for the next five full years. By December 31 of year five, choose one of two maintenance tracks.

Option 1 — Continuing Education:

Complete 15 CEUs/CMEs/CPDs in OB/GYN ultrasound from an ARDMS-accepted sponsor, and attest to at least 50 ultrasound scans, within your five-year cycle.

Option 2 — Reexamination:

Register for and pass both current Midwife Sonography exams (Computer-Based and Practical) no earlier than year four of your cycle, using the same passing criteria that apply to first-time applicants.
