How to Earn Your RDMS® Credential

Pass the SPI Exam

The Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) exam is the essential first step toward RDMS certification, building a strong foundation in ultrasound physics and instrumentation before advancing to a specialty.

SPI Exam

The SPI examination assesses the knowledge, skills and abilities in the areas of clinical safety, physical principles, pulsed echo instrumentation, and quality assurance.

Choose Your Specialty

After passing the SPI exam, you can earn your RDMS® credential by passing at least one specialty exam. While you can choose to specialize in one area first, many professionals expand their expertise by earning credentials in both Abdomen (AB) and Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB/GYN).

Abdomen (AB) Exam

Assess proficiency in performing diagnostic imaging of abdominal organs, including the liver, kidneys, pancreas, spleen, and gallbladder. It evaluates knowledge of vascular imaging, Doppler techniques, pathology, trauma-related abnormalities, postoperative anatomy, and clinical care practices. The exam also covers image optimization techniques, ultrasound physics, and imaging of small parts.

Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB/GYN) Exam

Gain expertise in fetal imaging and gynecological assessments.

It evaluates knowledge of vascular imaging, Doppler techniques, pathology, trauma-related abnormalities, postoperative anatomy, and clinical care practices. The exam also covers image optimization techniques, ultrasound physics, and imaging of small parts.

This exam focuses on fetal imaging and gynecological assessments, including first, second, and third-trimester anatomy, placental health, amniotic fluid evaluation, and reproductive system pathology. Like the AB exam, it includes 165 multiple-choice questions and takes three hours to complete.
